Getting Circumcised as a Teenager or Adult

Before the procedure, Dr Stearn will explain the risks, benefits, and expectations to ensure a fully informed decision is made—whether you're a parent planning circumcision for your son or an adult considering the procedure for yourself.

Mogen Clamp Technique for Teen & Adult Circumcision

✔ Dr Stearn uses the Mogen clamp technique for circumcision, a virtually painless circumcision method.
✔ This technique ensures a quick, safe procedure with minimal discomfort and fast recovery.

Circumcision for Phimosis Treatment

Teenage circumcision is sometimes recommended as a treatment for phimosis and other conditions that may become problematic as puberty progresses.

✔ If circumcision is the most effective treatment for phimosis, the Mogen clamp technique is an excellent option.
✔ Dr Stearn provides teen circumcision for patients 13 years and older, as well as for adult men of all ages.

Whatever your reason for seeking circumcision, our professional medical team is here to help you achieve your personal health goals safely and comfortably.

Benefits of Circumcision for Adolescents & Adults

Although circumcision is often performed in infancy, Dr Stearn routinely performs circumcisions for teens (13+) and adults of all ages.

🩺 No medical referral is required – You can book directly with our clinic or through your primary care doctor if preferred.
🩺 If you have questions, you can schedule a consultation before the procedure.

Potential Benefits of Circumcision for Teenagers & Adults

Lowers the risk of penile cancer – While this risk is already low, circumcision further reduces it.
Reduces the risk of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) – Circumcision has been linked to a lower risk of HIV and other STDs.
Decreases the chance of urinary tract infections (UTIs) – Circumcision reduces the likelihood of infections in the bladder and urinary tract.
Prevents foreskin infections – Circumcised males are not at risk for infections under the foreskin.
Eliminates the possibility of phimosis – Circumcision prevents tight foreskin from getting stuck, a condition that can cause pain and require medical intervention.

Planning for Your Teen’s Recovery After Circumcision

Proper planning for the recovery period ensures your teen's comfort and a smooth healing process.

What to Expect During Recovery

✔ Your teen may need extra care and comfort in the first few days after the procedure.
✔ The presence of a parent or caregiver is especially helpful during the initial recovery period.
✔ Pain and discomfort should be mild to moderate and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief (as advised by Dr Stearn).

When Can My Teen Return to Normal Activities?

🏫 Back to school: Most teens can return to school within a week or sooner, depending on how they feel.
🤸 Physical activity: Avoid running, jumping, biking, swimming, and sports for at least two weeks to prevent irritation and complications.
🩹 Healing timeline: Full healing typically takes 6-8 week. The acute phase of healing is 2 weeks. At 2 weeks the stitches will be removed by Dr Stearn.

Tips for a Smooth Recovery

Plan for rest: Ensure your teen has a comfortable place to relax with minimal movement for the first couple of days.
Loose clothing: Dress your teen in loose-fitting underwear and pants to avoid irritation.
Pain management: Follow doctor-recommended pain relief guidelines (Tylenol/acetaminophen is typically advised; avoid ibuprofen if instructed).
Hygiene: Keep the area clean and dry—use warm water for gentle cleaning and avoid harsh soaps.
Monitor for complications: Check for signs of infection, such as excessive swelling, redness, fever, or pus, and contact Dr Stearn if concerned.

When to Contact Dr Stearn

🚨 Seek medical advice if your child experiences:
Persistent bleeding despite applying pressure.
Signs of infection (redness, pus, foul odor, fever).
Difficulty urinating or extreme discomfort.

By planning ahead and ensuring a comfortable recovery environment, you can help your teen heal smoothly and return to normal activities as quickly as possible.

The Day Of Surgery

Before Coming to the Clinic

Hygiene: Have your teen take a bath or shower before arriving for the procedure.

PLEASE TRIM YOUR PUBIC HAIR

Entertainment: Teens may want to bring a book or a music player with calming music to help them relax before and after the procedure.

Parental Consent Requirements

✔ A parent or legal guardian must accompany the teen to the clinic.
✔ If both parents are not present, the absent parent must provide written permission confirming they:

  • Are aware of the planned circumcision.

  • Have agreed to the procedure.

Failure to provide proper parental consent may result in delays or rescheduling of the procedure.

📞 If you have any questions about consent requirements, contact our clinic in advance.

Anesthetic Prior to Circumcision

To ensure a pain-free experience, a local anesthetic is administered before the procedure.

How the Anesthetic Works

Injection Location: The anesthetic is given through the skin near the base of the penis.
Purpose: The foreskin is numbed completely, ensuring no pain during the procedure.
Duration: The circumcision itself takes just a few minutes.

Will My Teen or I as the Adult Be Awake During the Procedure?

Yes, but the anesthetic ensures that you/he will not feel any pain.
Minimizing stress: Bringing calm music and headphones can help to provide distraction and reduce any anxiety.

After the Procedure: Post-Circumcision Recovery for Teens & Adults

Following your circumcision, you can expect some mild swelling and discomfort, but proper aftercare will help ensure a smooth and speedy recovery.

What to Expect in the First Few Days

Swelling: Your penis may swell in the first 2 days, which is normal.
Pain: Most teenagers and men experience mild discomfortover-the-counter pain relievers (e.g., acetaminophen/Tylenol) are usually sufficient.

Post-Surgery Care Instructions

Dressing Care: You will have a dressing over the head of your penis. Follow Dr Stearn’s instructions on when and how to remove it.
Supportive Underwear: Wear snug-fitting underwear that provides good support. The penis should be held upright to help reduce swelling.
Hygiene: Keep the area clean and dry, avoiding baths and pools until healing progresses.

Follow-Up Schedule

Next Day (Day 1 Post-Op):

  • First dressing change and wound check.

  • Dr Stearn will assess early healing and any signs of complications.

Two Days After Surgery (Day 2 Post-Op):

  • Second dressing change and evaluation of swelling, bleeding, or discomfort.

Two Weeks After Surgery:

  • Suture removal

  • Final assessment to ensure proper healing and that there are no signs of infection or complications.

Why Follow-Ups Are Important

✔ Dr Stearn will monitor your healing progress and address any concerns.
✔ Regular dressing changes reduce infection risk and promote clean healing.
✔ Ensures proper scar formation and that everything is healing correctly.

When Can I Return to Work & Activities?

Sedentary Work (Office Jobs): Many men return to work in 2–3 days, depending on how they feel.
Physical Work & Strenuous Activities: Wait longer before resuming jobs requiring heavy lifting, physical exertion, or intense movement.
Sexual Activity & Masturbation: Avoid for at least 4–6 weeks to allow proper healing.

✔ Recovery time frames differ from person to person.
Follow Dr Stearn’s specific care instructions to heal as quickly and comfortably as possible.
